Ah, the joys of extreme weather! Long afternoons in the water at the beach, grab and go meals from the prepared cooler at your favourite grocery store, and of course, coming home to a cool home.
Many of us can only stand the heat for so long, and it looks like we’ve only just begun the first hot stretch of the summer. With daytime highs rising to the mid and high 30’s this means a much higher load and stress on your air conditioning unit. During extreme weather stretches like this you may arrive home to find that your AC isn’t cooling as expected and, having a hard time keeping up with the heat. For example… at 40 degrees outside, it is likely not going to get any cooler than 28 inside, this is a normal operation.
Here are a few tips to help your Air Conditioner “stay cool” during a heatwave:
Change Your Air Filter
Your HVAC System’s air filter will become clogged with dirt and particles over time. This makes it less effective at lowering indoor temperatures. Keeping your air filter clean can also lower your unit’s energy consumption by up to 15%.
Inspect the Outside Unit
At least twice a month check for and remove loose vegetation or debris from around the outside unit.
Use Your Ceiling Fans
Ensure your ceiling fans are turning in the correct direction for the season. During the summer months, your ceiling fan should be turning counterclockwise to create a downdraft and direct cool breeze.
Close your Windows and Draw Your Blinds
As simple as this tip sounds, close your windows and draw curtains or blinds. The more heat you can keep out, the less your unit has to work.
Schedule Preventative Maintenance
Schedule your semi-annual maintenance, preferably in the early spring and late summer. Our technicians will address both your heating and cooling systems to ensure they are functioning properly and ready to keep you comfortable year-round.
Ask about our Service Partner Plan
